Joni Ikonen loves scoring goals. Lucky for him, he’s pretty good at doing it too. Ever since he moved to Sweden to play for Frölunda’s junior team at the age of 16, he’s been, remarkably enough, lining up more goals than assists – and his overall point production has gone through the roof. After two seasons in the U18 and U20 divisions, Ikonen has an average of well over one point per game. It’s easy to see there’s a lot of talent and an even bigger load of potential here.

Head always on a swivel. Calm. Good first pass. Gets dangerous and redirectable shots on goal very well. Skinny guy, doesn’t look close to what he’s listed as. Does a decent job of using his good mobility to steer puck carriers to the outside. He needs to work on his defensive play, as he tends to make poor decisions in his own zone and he seems lost at times. He is also fairly weak on the walls and needs to improve on his physical game.

With the deadly release and accuracy Tolvanen has with his shot, the volume of rubber he is firing at net is important. He has a full repertoire in his arsenal and changes the angle of his attack quickly. Coupled with a lightning release and the swagger of a natural shooter, there is no doubt what Tolvanen is trying to do when he gets the puck on his stick. He is fine going into high-traffic areas on the ice but knocking in rebounds in front of the net is not his specialty. Tolvanen is a sniper in the purest sense. One area that Tolvanen will need to improve is his overall defensive play.

Those 46 markers were good for the third most in the entire OHL. Gadjovich’s weakness is in his skating speed. He owns clean mechanics but struggles to reach a high top speed. Entwistle is a big, strong,physical two-way winger. He is a great skater for his size, although his lanky frame and long legs lead to his stride getting a little long at times. He’s very aggressive on the puck and on the forecheck. He uses his long reach to reach out and surprise defenders with a poke check, then uses his imposing size to separate his man from the puck. He has good speed, great decisionmaking abilities and very impressive hands. His size is also an asset in the corners, and he can be dominant possessing he puck and cycling it in the offensive zone. He has good offensive instincts and has the ability to handle the puck at high speeds and make nice passes in transition. He has a very good shot, good accuracy and very good velocity behind it. He is a player that is willing to do anything to try and help his team win, he sacrifices his body to block shots, gets into the dirty areas and throws his weight around in the physical game. He is defensively aware and possesses a scoring touch and a physical edge. The defenceman has a multitude of strengths, chief among them being his awareness on the ice. That skill is most obvious in his own end, where he is usually found in excellent defensive position to deal with the opposition’s attacks. As a result, he does well at occupying shooting lanes to either block the puck from getting to his net or forcing a player to look for another option.

He pefers a more active style of defence, however, using his stick to break up passes and take the puck away from his check along the boards. Once he has obtained it, his great awareness allows him to locate the best passing option to get out of his zone.

He can also lead the breakout himself, thanks to his exceptional skating ability. He has a smooth stride and is able to glide forward or backward with relative ease. When that is combined with his awareness, he’s virtually improssible to beat to the net in a one-on-one situation.

His offensive totals alone aren’t going to impress any scouts. He has had a few good offensive seasons in his lifetime, but the production hasn’t followed him on his rapid ascent through the ranks of Finnish hockey. The fact that someone had to go through video from a seven-year span to get enough material to create a highlight pack is an indication of the state of his offensive game.

However, the decline in scoring numbers has raised some concerns that Comtois might have reached his plateau as a hockey player.
